Gibran Chair Lecture: Secularism in Islam: A Path to Peace

Dr. Maher Mahmassani

Author of Islam in Retrospect: Recovering the Message

Dr. Maher Mahmassani has over 40 years of experience in providing and managing the provision of comprehensive legal services to leading corporations and international organizations in the US and the Middle East.

He held teaching positions at the law schools of the Lebanese University and the Arab University in Beirut, Lebanon, and authored many books and articles in English, French, and Arabic.
His latest book, Islam in Retrospect: Recovering the Message, aims at recovering and reaffirming Islam’s underlying and guiding principles. Dr. Mahmassani’s analysis and interpretation of Islam sheds light on the fact that Islam respects and calls for secularism, and Islam – if correctly understood – can be a path to peace.
