Dear Friends, Gregory Ball (Dean)

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) is one of the largest colleges at the University of Maryland. Our renowned departments, centers and programs push the boundaries of fields across the full range of the behavioral and social sciences. While our college can be characterized by the breadth of fields of study that are pursued in the social and behavioral sciences, each member of our community is united in our mission to Be the Solution to the world’s great challenges.

Certainly, one of the world’s greatest challenges is the pursuit of peace, and identifying and overcoming related barriers. In this work, we draw on the insights and expertise offered by the College’s three endowed Peace Chairs. Contemporary universities are often criticized for not considering issues of human values and ethics. The programs run by our peace chairs provide an answer to these critics and demonstrate how these important issues can be addressed even at a secular university such as the University of Maryland, College Park.

The College is honored and grateful to have May Rihani join us as director of the Gibran Chair.  She is known throughout the world as a respected scholar and as a champion for gender equality. She is known throughout the University community as an inspirational speaker and a consummate “connector” of peace advocates and thought leaders. We look forward to helping Ms. Rihani transform her visions for the Gibran Chair into reality.
